13/1 The potential of using technology-infused materials for art making and classrooms

The potential of using technology-infused materials for art making and classrooms

To be honest, I have to say before I  am taking this class, I am not a big fun of new technology artworks, because I don't think that is art, I feel like art is more about a concept, like a painting work or a video work, but combined with some technology ideas I am not really fascinated about it. Also, I am really scared of using technology to my artworks, because I think it is not that safe and I am afraid that I will hurt myself or something, another thing is I am not really good at using computer software, like photoshop, illustrator and etc. So before this class start, I am so worried about myself, I feel like I have no ideas in this class, I can't imagine the rest of my life at TC because I feel like I will make a lot of mistakes in this classroom and maybe make some artworks which are not safe. But when I learned all these new things in Richard's class,  I realized that I was totally wrong. Technology is not a monster, it won't eat me. Moreover, I see so many potentials of using technology for art making and classrooms. I want to share this link first http://www.weiwang-art.com/, this is my website, and you can see a big different with my old works. I remembered this semester in Dr. Burton's class,  she invited two elementary art teachers and their students to have a conversation with us. That night they shared about what they learned in their classroom, I was so surprised, because they are learning about everything, not only about traditional art, but also they learned how to draw something on iPad or Photoshop, a boy shared his thought, he said he is really fascinated on technology, he hope all of art teachers can teach them more about using technology to making art, not just doing color mixing or some traditional artworks. At that time, I realized that we are living in the technology world and especially for kids, they grow up with technology, they need to learn more about technology to design more fabulous technology in the future. Also technology skill it is different with traditional art skill, in traditional art if you want to enhance your art skill, you need to practice for a long time, but technology skill it is different, everything it's already there, you just need to remember the steps of how to making it, just like doing mathematics, I think that is the reason why students feel very confident of using technology to make their artworks.

Personal Learning Objective

1. Build up the concept about New Media and New form.
2. hope I can create more and more new media way to teach my students in the future or doing my own works.
3.Know more and more new media concept artist
4.Visit lot of technology art museum or gallery
5.Compare the differences and similarities between traditional art and technology art.
6. Hope I will be more confidence for teaching in the future.
7.Why people like using media and social media, is that really helpful in our life?
8.Connect to the readings: I hope I can design a new media class for K-12 teaching in the future, also hope my students like this class, it is trying to break the traditional way of teaching art.

How I managed to meet, change, or not meet these goals

First, I think I build up a lot of concept about New Media and New form, for instance, my works in this class, is not only about the technique, I also combined with my Fine Arts background into my artworks, I am exploring the relationship between New Media and Fine Arts, hence I think I did some good works in this class. Moreover, I did some lesson plan for my future students, hope they will like my class. I want to teach them about everything we covered in this class, especially Coding, as I mentioned in my previous assignment, I found a great coding website for kids, it's designed by Disney and the main character is from Frozen, I feel like young child will be involved in this coding class with their favorite animation characters.

The MetroCAF 2016 gave me a strong impression. MetroCAF is the annual NYC Metropolitan Area College Computer Animation Festival organized by the New York City chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH. Thier works are about animations, but using a new way to work on it. First computer art field is a new media concept because computer lets us know that art can be an image, sound, animation, video, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, video game, website, algorithm, performance or gallery installation. The winner of 2016 MetroCAF artwork are more focused on the concept, I can see the relationship between fine arts and computer art world, so I believe this is a new way of making computer art, computer art also could have some deep ideas.

I think I meet most of my goals, but one thing I need to disagree with myself is, new media is not only on the surface, but also could be deep. Everything is art, doing new media is to break the traditional way of making art, to push artists to a new level.

I persevered to complete the project successfully:😎I try my best to complete my project successfully and combine with fine arts field in order to found more possiblities
Eliminate carelessness:😑 I still need to be more careful when I making my artworks

13/2 Final Project

Description:
I want to make this work like a game to express my concept. It's like make a connection between fine arts and technology art. The concept of my artwork is about a person or a group of people who are not want to be judged by the justice hammer. This idea is based on one of my favorite movie The Reader. In my opinion, this film it is not a love story, it is talk about what is justice. The unfortunate thing in our society is when the group of people is against the law, they feel like they are innocent, because everybody doing the same thing, it is not a criminal behavior in their minds.

12/2 3 connections between "making" and an art-classroom

  1.  Seymour Papert states (1971), "Some think of use the computer to program the kid; others think of using the program the computer. But most of them have at least this in common: the transaction between the computer and the kid will be some kind of "conversation" or "questions and answers " in word or numbers. " In my opinion, to teach kids about technology are very important, because we are living in the technology world and we are using technology everyday. Kids will explore more interesting artworks in the classroom, a lot of people in my country China, think kids are too young to learn technology, so when was a little girl in my country, our computer class is learn how to type and some other basic skill of using computer. This is not a positive to kids to learn, because how to use computer or other devices are very easy for kids, they will know how to play with them without any instruction. I believe with the development of technology, kids need to have technology class in the art classroom,  kids always lights up my ideas, although some of their ideas are not easy to do or are not possible, for scientist they also let their impossible ideas to be true. It is great to provide kids an art class for making technology work
  2. I love the video of Sylvia's mini make show, because she changing herself to make projects in science, technology, engineering and math. This will be a great example for kids, I think for every teacher should know is never underestimate your students, any of your new lesson in the classroom for kids, will give them a lot of imaginations. Give more opportunities for them can let them to think about by themselves, not just asked teacher how to do it or followed by teacher. Asked kids to followed by teacher is training them to be a robot and they will not think like human beings anymore.

  1. Sylvia Libow Martinez (2013),"  Students will learn, they will invent, they will teach, they will collaborate, and they will share knowledge when it best suits their needs, interests, and style." I believe teaching is not only teach students a new skill, it is more about help students to develop their own ideas with the skill they have learned in the classroom. I think the reason why there are a lot of differences between China and American education, because most of Chinese are believe Buddhism and the central concept is samsara, means the endless cycle of birth and suffering and death and rebirth. The principle symbol is a cycle, hence in education, still followed the old way of teaching and it is repeating. But most of American is Christian; the principle of the symbol is a cross, and it has vertical and horizontal direction. I think the horizontal represents the teaching of art technique; the vertical represent the concept. Hence the American education always can lead students to a new level to explore art.

10/2 seven thoughtful comments and take away

Seven comments:
1.         Zhenzhen 8/3 lesson plan hot to become a thing

This work demonstrates intense creativity of teaching, I I appreciate with this lesson plan because I believe that art is not only about painting and drawing, but also is more about how to express yourself as an artist. Art technique it is a skill, the important part in the artwork is how to demonstrate your ideas.
2.           Steph’s 3/3 On/Off experiment art project
I really like your work, because, for my on/off project, I felt that I have nothing to do without my phone and computer, but your works are unique, because you provide a new way to express the feeling of on/off experiment, not just sharing your thought, these likes not only show people's life style nowadays, but also express that people are spent much more time on their digital devices.
3.          Seung’s 8/1 Stop Motion Animation work
I love your stop motion work Seung ! it is very interesting work because you use a different way to show your works. The reverse way to show a plant-growing period it is very creative. Also, you work very simple, it is very minimalism, I like it, and I believe less is more in artworks, it is very strong to show your ideas.
4.            Regina’s 8/1 Stop Motion
I love this stop motion because it is not only about stop motion work, but also it will be very helpful for kids, they can know that how to mix colors, I think this is a very interesting way for teaching students about colors and stop motion; it is very creative combination.
5.             Katherine’s 4/1 Part 2: Pursued Photography Idea
These works look like a story. I feel like it is about the different weather and combine with photography is a good idea, makes it looks like something different. I think you can base on this concept to build up more; it will be great to put all those works together.
6.            Sophia’s 7/1 Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen
I really like your sound work, when I listen to your work, I feel like I am a food in a monster’s mouth and this monster is chewing me, I know its sounds like very weird feeling, but I really enjoy it, and I feel like sound a re very interesting, it give you lots of different and unique experiences.
7.             Avery’s 6/1 Video Project

I love this video work a lot! It is very amusing and artistic. I feel like the original work, and your work is using an irony way to judge some woman. They are to desire to be loved but show too many-wired behaviors. I think if you can ask more people to do this together it will be very interesting.

Take-Away:
Looking at other's coursework it is very helpful to me, because I can build up more ideas and rethink about the previous coursework, also based on other's coursework, I can learn a lot, I can know that some of my understanding are too simple, but others think about more deeply, it can help me  to be more professional.

9/2 programming (Scratch) experience and 2 connections to the art classroom.

This is my first time designed a programming work; I spent 2 hours to finished this work. It was hard for me because I've never done it before. I downloaded the Swift playground to my iPad to practice more about coding. It is very interesting App and easy to play with it. For me, I think coding it is very different with traditional art because it is more like mathematics, you have to make sure every single part it right unless it will be chaos. Also, I feel like the design a coding is like the math formulas, I am not like coding because it reminds my mathematics and I never pass any math class when I was little. When I am working on my coding work, I felt very frustrated, because I have to think a lot and make a pre-plan before I start it. Also, I have to make sure everything is followed my coding design. It is very different with making art, when paint or draw something, it always by spontaneously. Overall, I like this experiences, because I got new skills and after I had finished it, I felt I can do it and it not that terrible as I thought about it before.

For art classroom, I think it is very important for students to know, especially for kids, because “An understanding of computer science is becoming increasingly essential in today’s world. Our national competitiveness depends on upon our ability to educate our children—and that includes our girls—in this critical field.”By Sheryl Sandberg and she is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. I very agree with that; the coding class can help students to build up more knowledge. Also, I found a very interesting website for kids to learn about coding. https://studio.code.org/s/frozen/stage/1/puzzle/2
This website teach students to know what is coding and how coding by themselves with Disney Princess, I think this is very good example for my future teaching, especially for girls and kids, because it is very easy to know, and kids will think this is an interesting way to learn a new skill, they won't feel boring in this class. Secondly, I think coding will help kids to explore their potential skills in the future, because everybody is different and we all good at in the different fields, so teach them some new skills will help them to be more professional.

8/4 Two take aways from readings: section III

1. Kylie Peppler (July 2013) has claimed that although creative coding can be used to create a wide array of genres, including animations, digital stories, music, simulations, and interactive art, one of the most well-defined uses of creative code it to create video games. Immensely popular with today;s youth, game design is the relatively recent addition to the field of arts education. I very agree with that, one of my favorite video game is called Minecraft.  Brain Hught (2016) has claimed that Metcraft is the first step in developing the Minecraft gaming platform as a teaching and outreach tool. It is intended to serve as a proof of concept that shows Minecraft can be a useful tool to create fun and creative educational museum experiences. /Metcraft's ultimate goal is to foster a spirit of independent exploration and experimentation in young museumgoers both before and after they visit The Met.Minecraft is a popular multiplayer online gaming platform. It enjoys roughly 27 million players worldwide, 43.7% of whom are between ages of 15 and 21, and 20.5% are under 15 years old. It's a bit like virtual Legos. I like this idea. Also, my favorite part is the open-ended "creative mode," I can create a lot of interesting artworks in this mode. Also, I feel like this could be a new way of teaching new media art in the class, especially for students who don't like painting and drawing, they will explore more interesting ideas in art.

2.A new culture of learning.
In this book, it talks about a lot of different way of learning, the click here to start learning part gave a strong impression because I can know that learning is not only about get a technique skill. In the forums, Tom found support among fellow diabetics. In my opinion, this online chat room can help people to know the knowledge of diabetes, also they can make a lot of friends in this web. I believe this is a new culture of learning, learning is not only in the classroom, but it can also happen in everywhere.

• Modifications
                              • This class explores the relationship between photography and painting collage; students are welcome to share their thoughts and share their ideas in the class.

             • Evaluation
·      I don’t want them to feel like it is so hard for doing art, as long as they are working on this and work hard, they all will get A, because I believe it is hard to distinguish what is good art and what is bad art.

8/2 Description of my stop motion

Title: woman and fish
Medium: color papers, magazines
Descriptions: This work is named woman and fish, the reason why I have this idea is based on one of my painting work. I did that painting in 2014, I don't know why, I just want to paint a fish with bicycle, and I showed my works to my foundation year instructor at CAFA, he was surprised, and he asked me is that based on the words from British" woman need a man, just like a fish need a bicycle." I was surprised too because I had never heard about it before, my instructor told me 100 years old in British that was woman's slogan. So this stop motion work is from this painting work, it a relationship between woman and fish.

7/3 Response for The Act of Listening

This is podcast gave me a very an big impressioin, because before I started to listen this podcast, I thought is more about art movement in sound art, but I was totally wrong. This prodcast started from Lee Allen Jones work in 1993, this is firsrt-person storytelling from two African American teenages, it is a new way to listen to each others. Moreover, I like Honor Harder's work to, she is a sound artist.Few years ago she started to hear the space' The Big Bang', I was very suprised about this, because it is easy to tell people what is looks like but it is hard to tell what it sounds like. Also Thomas Waston said ear is can be incredibly effective detective of patterns, I really agree with that. I think there are tremendous potential in sound art, because sound is very mysterious, I noticed that when you think about something or speak to yourself, thoes are from your mental activity, but you still are able to hear about your own voice without speak it out. Also Bease on Dave works, I agree wtih him too, I think listen to people is vital, because if you won't listen and won't try to make a conversation with others, you will never know what are they think about it.

7/2 Reflections

Sound always exerts a particular fascination on me, because when you close your eyes, you are able to see nothing, but you still can hear the sounds which is around you, I feel like this is like a magic, also sound are very different with visual image. When I walk around my neighborhood, I close my eyes to listen for a while, I just realized that there are so many interesting sounds around me, even an unconspicuous action are very interesting too and it all could be part of my sound project. Also I did some reserche about sound art, 'In Western art early examples include Luigi Russolo's Intonarumor or noise intoners, and subsequent experiments by Surrealist the Situationist International, and in Fluxus happenings. Luigi Russolo (30 April 1885 – 6 February 1947) was an Italian Futurist painter, composer, builder of experimental musical instruments, and the author of the manifesto The Art of Noises(1913).Luigi Russolo (30 April 1885 – 6 February 1947) was an Italian Futurist painter, composer, builder of experimental musical instruments, and the author of the manifesto The Art of Noises(1913).'

In my opinion, Luigi's sound artworks are very unique and I believe this is trying to break the traditional art and music style at that time. Art is trying to break the traditional way of doing art, because of Marcel Duchamp, I think art is changing, hence the art edcation should change to, because if art education still followed the old way of teaching, it is hard to explore more and more avant garde artists. Furthermore, I want to make a lesson plan based on this concept, I would like to ask students to paint something according to the music, like I will play music, from classical music to pop music and some are from students background, like some music from Japan, China and etc. While they are listening to this music, they should close their eyes and then after the music is finish, pick up one or more than one music which give you a strong impression, then start to paint based on this music, It could be a representational artworks or abstract painting. But must put some elements from your own culture in your artworks. This class is more focusing on how to do your artworks more freedom and by spontaneously, because in my opinion, art is not about how to obtains a mastery technique skills, it is more about how to explore yourself. Based on Sigmund Freud’ structural model of the psyche define the three parts of the psychic apparatus id, Ego and Superego. The id is the primitive and instinctive component of personality. According to the id, I want to help students to explore their id in this art class, think about how to doing art by their nature. Furthermore, the reason why music combined with art, because I want to develop their potential creativity.

7/1 Sound Project

Title: Minions
Description:
First I record some sound from my daily rountine, for instance, the sound of door knck, the sound of flush the toilets, the sound of shower, the sound of open the door, find my key and open my bags. The most interesting part is I recored lot of sounds from my favorite toy, Minions. Following video is my Minions and the vocie of Minios is from this toy, I am trying to make a plot between Minions, one is locked the door and the other one can't open the door, so he try to use his key and knocked the door, but the other one just want to have fun, so he refused to open the door for him, then he tried to call him in order to make a conversation to get into the room.

6/1 Video

This work is based on Meshes of the Afternoon, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs6vYjwEIy4, this is an experimental movie. For my video, is about my night dream but based on experimental movie style, I want to show a feeling of my night dreams.

6/2 Describe the creative potential of video and what it can do for art classrooms or education in general

The video is very interesting work. First you need to have a plan, and then, you decide where your should start it and where your should end it, also you need to consider about the sounds, what kind of music is suit for your video and when you are doing editing, you have to think about which part should go first and which part need to be deleted. In my opinion, it is not that easy to do video works, because every single part you need to pre-plan it.

The creative potential of video:
In my view, the video is a logical work, and I think it can collaborate with other fields, for instance, it will be work for installation, fashion work or bio art. Because nowadays, more and more people know how to make the video and this is an essential skill, we don't need to do video in contemporary art; we should create more and more different things, try to break the traditional way of doing video.

For art classroom:
I think for kids, we can start from stop-motion first, this is not only about video, but it is also video and photography and children will be confident of making stop motion, it is easy to learn.

5/3 Three take-aways from the section-readings

1. Based on the New literacies and social practices of digital remixing, I know remix is not only for music, it also can work in movie, writing, images and the like, especially, in movie it describe that "You go see a movie by Michael Moore [or whoever] and then you whine to your friends about how it is the best movie you have ever seen or the worst movie ever made. What you are doing is taking Michael Moore’s creativity and remixing it in your life. You are using it to … extend your own views or criticize his views. You are taking culture and practicing this art of remixing. Indeed, every single act of reading and choosing and criticizing and praising culture is in this sense remix. And it is through this general practice that cultures get made." In my opinion, people are doing remixing everyday, because when you got a new ideas or new feelings, it always by what you just saw or just read, for an artist, ideas are coming from everywhere, it may come into your mind when your are swimming or you are fishing or from your day dreaming, so I think when an artist creates a new work, it is a remix action, because the new concept is not immediately jumped into their mind, it always based on what they saw it before, or they give a new critique from something or a designer design a new technology, so that's why I think, people are doing remixing everyday.

2. THE NEW DIGITAL ARTS: FORMS, TOOLS, AND PRACTICES, nowadays, technology world provide people a new lifestyle and it also break lot of traditional things, such as in Visual Arts,Comics and Manga, Digital Photography,Dance,Digital Music,Drama,Film, Video, and YouTube,Podcasting and Digital Radio, Animation, Machinima, Creative Writing,FanFiction and Digital Poetry & Spoken Word. All these things let young people share their work, receive immediate feedback from peer groups, and gain access to experts who can help them hone their craft.I really agree with that, like the Brushes APP, this is a very successful APP, people can draw and paint everywhere and don't need to carry all of your art materials, you just open your phone and can quickly record your ideas immediately.

3.Digital Story Production, I had 1 year experiences of doing video art, and I created lot of video works during my senior year at SVA, I really like doing video art, in the beginning, it is so hard to learn about Final Cut Pro and I was always failed in this software but based on this reading article, I would suggest my students start with IMOIVE first, because it is easy to learn and it won't destroy your enthusiasm with video art.

5/2 Potential of scanography for art making or classroom teaching

Scanography creating a new way of doing art, in my opinion, the concept of scanography is to break the traditional way of doing art, everything can be art not only painting and drawing. Just like Marcel Duchamp's artwork, 'Fountain', the piece was a porcelain urinal, which was signed "R.Mutt" and titled Fountain. I believe this concept will change artists to create more and more new form of artworks in the future, it helps artists to open their minds and let artists and designer know art is not just about painting and drawing, it could be anything. Furthermore, it also can help students to know the same concept, the will feel more free to doing art and build up students creativity. In the classroom, also students ideas of doing scanography can light up more interesting things, teachers are able to learn some crazy ideas from them, it won't like a traditional art classroom, teachers and students will influence each other and students not only learn skills from teachers, their ideas also can teach art teachers to enhance their class.

3/3 Digital photography: Three connections to children

Digital photography is very different with painting and drawing because it more focuses on subtraction, but painting and drawing are a focus on adding more things. So it is two different way to think about how to make art.

1.Children are very interested in new things, they like to explore new materials, so I think this will be a new way to let them know about art, let them know art is not only about drawing and painting, all those traditional way, anything could be art, art is everywhere, a design of light, a design of chair, etc. Let them know anything they are making could be art, there is no exact answer for what is art.this is trying to break the traditional way to art teaching, children will feel very exciting to doing with new things and explore it by themselves.

2. Children always can give us a big surprise, because they are trying to explore the world, they are very creative and they always have a really logical thinking. Children can start digital photography from Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera, because this is really easy to learn and children will feel they can do it,also it can boost children's self-esteem.

3. Some of the children, they are not very good at painting and drawing, but if they know how to take a photo, they still are able to explore more artworks, they can take a photo for their classmates, their family or their neighborhood. It allows children to display their potentiality.

1/3 Part Two

I asked my friend did this feedback of my ideas, he likes the first idea, because he mentioned in the feedback, the first idea reminds him of 'Antonioni’s film Blow Up', I think this is very interesting, Blow Up is one of my favorite movies and we just talked about this in class, also he think there’s absolutely mystery and danger hides in the beauty and things are always not that simple as the way they look. But he thinks it lacks some clue to help the audience to figure out this is a crime scene. I really agree with that, I need to fix more.

2/3 Impact 25

1/3 Part 1: Two Ideas

For my picture, I took it at school basement, I want to use a different way to look at the staircase, so I stand in the basement and looked up to see the staircase, I was surprised about that view, it looks very surrealism and minimalism, so I press the shutter immediately.
Based on this photo I got following two ideas.

Idea 1:
Title: Daisy
First, I really like surrealist art and minimalist design, all of my artworks are those two artistic styles, so that's why I took this photo like that. The story of this image is based on Agatha Christie's crime story, because when I was 12 years old,I was very fascinated with all of her stories, it always gave me a big surprise in the end of her novel. I am planning to do an installation with this image and put lots of daisy flowers around a room or a small box with this image and daisy flowers. The image will be put on the wall or the box, and put lots of daisy flowers on the ground or in the box, it will look like Robert Gober's artwork like the following image, he is one of my favorite artists and this work concept is a relationship between photography and installation. The reason why it named Daisy because it has double meanings one is a name of a girl and the other one is a name of a flower, I want to express a feeling of a crime, but I won't tell you the ending, you will be free to imagine about this story.

Idea 2:
Title: Daisy
The other idea about this image, I want to use iPad to show this image on the wall and put a wood case to cover the iPad and in the middle e of the case, I will make a small hole in order to let people look this image through this small hole. I want to show a feeling like a peep through the keyhole like you are peeping at a crime scene by accident.

Connection to A Personal Learning Objective

'Social influences are also essential in shaping how we use new media, with whom, and for what purposes. Relationship stage is a factor: early in relationships, we stick to the media in which we started. As relationships progress, we expand into others. Personality styles matter. Shy and anxious people may prefer online media, while those who are sociable to begin with may gravitate towards any medium that allows more opportunities to interact with others. Culture matters. 'From Personal Connections in the Digital Age NANCY K. BAYM

I agree about Baym's idea, I feel like people are very sick to the media, right now, because people are always look at their phones in everywhere, sometimes, there are no messages or emails, people just like to look at their phones by no reasons. Also one very interesting thing is this summer over half of the world people are starting playing Pokemon Go, include myself, I know it is not real, but when you play it, it was so fun and also Pokemon is one of my favorite animation when I was little. Also I think 'like' button is a very good design, a lot of shy person like me, prefer to click that and I think this is better than saying something to somebody.

One connection:  7.Why people like using media and social media, is that really helpful in our life?

Baym answered my question in some way, but not very exactly,I was did a performance art during my Junior studied at School Of Visual Arts, I gathered around 25 people at union square and I asked them to hand in hand, then made a big circle, I asked them to doing something in the center of the circle, because I want them to have 30 minutes without their phone and relax, think about something, also I want to see how many people will involved with us, unfortunately, there are one person interested about this and she lead us did some Yoga. After this, I feel like NewYorker are very busy for their own life, they don't care about what happened around them, they just looked up their phones and walk fast away.

here is my performance art video.

Digital Painting

I got my new ipad and ipad pencil this week, I was so exciting about doing this digital painting works, this is my first time used this ipad pencil and I was doing around 3-4 photoshop by using my computer.
This week I used my ipad and ipad pencil did those four works by Photoshop app for ipad, it was so fun, because when I paint something on my ipad, it just like a real paper and using a pencil to do a artwork, everything is so real and it is better than wacom.
The first one is self-portrait and I did this without undo and ereaser. The Second and third one is just practice and the last one named 'where',I did two paintings, then I made it to gif animation, I really enjoyed about this experiences and I would like to do more digital works from now on.
